Published on 11 June 2025 at 20:45

On June 6, 2025, the FDA announced a voluntary recall of more than 20 million cage-free and organic brown shell eggs by August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California, following a confirmed outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis.

Affected Brands
The recall includes widely distributed brands such as Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside.

How to Identify the Recalled Eggs
The affected eggs were distributed between February 3 and May, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 19, 2025. Look for plant codes P-6562 or CA-5330 and Julian dates between 032 and 126 on both cardboard and plastic cartons.

Distribution Areas
California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Confirmed Cases
To date, 79 illnesses and 21 hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have occurred. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 72 hours after exposure and may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, abdominal cramps, and nausea.

Recommendations for Consumers

  • Check your refrigerator and discard or return any affected cartons.

  • Disinfect all surfaces and utensils that may have come into contact with the eggs.

  • Seek medical attention if symptoms develop.

  • Avoid consuming raw or undercooked eggs.

Company Response
As of May, August Egg Company has halted the distribution of fresh eggs and redirected impacted batches for pasteurization. An internal investigation is underway after two environmental samples at their California facility tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

This incident highlights the ongoing need for rigorous food safety practices and transparency across the supply chain.
